This trick is more commonly known as Funky Weapons Glitch.
If you enter Kong Battle while you're in DK Bonus / Bosses mode, you will get kicked out and the game will switch to Adventure mode. This causes an autosave into the file you have last viewed or deleted*. Data from Monkey Smash includes all guns with all upgrades and Simian Slam for all kongs. Be careful not to overwrite files you want to keep, since this will reset your Golden Banana count and more.

*Entering a file and going back to the main menu has an odd effect:
If more than one file isn't empty, the game may select one of the three files, or a temporary "file 4". To avoid losing data, view the fie you want to overwrite before you enter Kong Battle.
