What's the beach like in Saudi Arabia?
For one, we didn't realize the Red Sea was so beautiful. White sand, and really gorgeous water. (Unfortunately, the airport is nearby, so no drone footage possible.)
We brought our daughter for a family fun day to Jeddah Corniche. Specificly to a beach called the Obhur Corniche in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Entrance cost 12 USD per person. The weather was pretty perfect, a little windy to help us cool off from the heat. The water temperature was great-- a little chilly at first but quiet refreshing once you get your full body in.
Our 8 month old daughter Jean loved it. She has an inflatable floatie that keeps her safe, and her swimming has improved so much! It was a great family memory for us.
In fact: the beach was very family friendly. We suppose this is to be expected in Saudi Arabia. No loud music, no alcohol (obviosuly) and the men-only beach was seperate from the family area.
It was interesting to see men swimming bare chested (even in the family area) and the women remained covered up. No bikinis. Some women were swimming, but, for the most part, they remained on the sand.
From the beach, we went to Jeddah Yatch Club & Marina for dinner. Talk about luxury! Everyone was out taking their instagram photos. There was a beautiful floating mosque called Al Rahma Mosque down at one end, and a great atmosphere all around. Again, a very respectable place.
We've been consistently impressed with the food prices in Saudi. Even in a fancy yacht club, having dinner at a nice restaurant along the shoreline, we paid around 50 USD for a dinner for two. A similar place in Canada would cost more thaat double that, we assume. We had the mixed grill (lamb, beef and chicken) which was GREAT!, and muttabaq.
In Indonesia, there is a dish called martabak. It's based on muttabaq. So, it was fun for Ivana to try the original-- seeing as she grew up on martabak! The two dishes taste very similar, with the only difference being the ones in Indonesia are often street food: more oily, and you eat with your hands. The muttabaq here was quite light and more fancy.
With all the money we saved on the great food, we ordered ourselves a shisha. And what a shisha it was! Great flavor (double grape), very smooth and a great way to relax. We're not sure if shisha is technically haram, but there were loads of Muslim people around us, seemingly at every table, smoking and enjoying. So, we are assuming it is okay, at least culturally.
What a great day it was! We are learning to not be so nervous around Saudi. We weren't sure what to expect/ if we could film/ what to wear at the beach, but as it turned out... it was more familiar than different. We've been pleasantly surprised many times in Saudi, and our beach day was no different.
