Cassette unit sounded dull even after cleaning and demagnetization of the head. The music cassette sounded good on another boombox, so I could reasonably assume the cassette tape itself was good. I then made some low- level recordings (each a few seconds long and at -20 dB) at different frequencies starting with a 1000 Hz sine wave for reference purposes. I then made short 7,000, 8,000, and 9,000 Hz recordings. Already at 7,000 Hz the signal had dropped to 50 %. I then proceeded to make an azimuth adjustment with a flathead screwdriver and using a prerecorded 3,000 Hz cassette, because the 6,300 kHz cassette could not be found. The adjustment could also be made by ear--being sure to turn only a little at a time--, if no test instruments are available, since boomboxes are not exactly high fidelity anyways. The azimuth screw should be locked with something like nail polish or Loctite afterwards.
