Sand is one of the most favorite and requested Hawaiian songs. The steel guitar shines on this song. It is played by using the B11th tuning on the steel guitar. I used a cocanut under my left foot to level my lap steel out. It works good and is now an official part of my musical gear. I can't misplace my cocanut.
My other foot operates the volume pedal, which is an important piece of musical gear used for expression, and various awesome techniques that would be impossible without it. Some players use the volume knob to obtain violin sounds and other effects, but I prefer the volume pedal, since I started out playing pedal steel guitar. Jerry Byrd, arguably the greatest steel guitar player ever (1920-2005), always used a volume pedal. That's all I need to know. If you don't use a volume pedal in your playing, I highly recommend that you do, fo it opens a whole new realm of possibilities in music and gives you much more control over your sound and insrument.
I couldn't imagine playing without a volume pedal. It is a must for my music. There are many great brands. I've used Fender, Goodrich, BOSS, and Ernie Ball at times. They're all the same to me, but I prefer the Ernie Ball and think they last much longer.
I'm now using a Fender PR-726 chrome volume pedal made in Korea for my pedal steel guitar, and an Ernie Ball volume pedal for my lap steel. I keep a Goodrich in the car, so I'll always have a spare volume pedal in case it goes out on me. What happens is that the pots get "scratchy" after 6-months to a year and then you can hear that annoying noise through your amp every time you press the pedal up or down.
