Consistent with our Critical Incident Video Release Procedure, the department, today, released video from the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
Below is a brief synopsis of the critical incident:
At approximately 7:30 pm, officers responded to a neighbor disturbance involving a gun in the 15600 block of Knollhollow. As officers approached the suspect’s residence, they could hear him screaming in his backyard. Officers called the SAPD Mental Health Unit. During this time, a second call was made from the victim that the suspect was back outside, naked and holding a rifle. The suspect did not respond to the officer’s commands and continued to shout indiscriminately. At one point the suspect used the hood of a patrol vehicle to post the rifle in a shooting position, pointing the rifle at officers. A supervisor on scene fired his weapon several times, striking the suspect once in the left arm. Officers rendered first aid to the suspect, and he was transported to the hospital by EMS. The 22-year-old suspect, Bryan Spangrud, is currently facing two counts of Deadly Conduct and Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
As with all officer involved shootings, the District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident.
