The Samsung 990 Pro, like the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G and WD_Black SN850X, has gaming and DirectStorage optimizations. We recently tested and compared both of those drives in DirectStorage applications, and today we do the same with the Samsung 990 Pro. Both applications support RTX IO and GDeflate.
The bandwidth of the Samsung 990 Pro in DirectStorage applications isn't the highest, but its ability to sustain its performance is better than most other drives, which could be crucial in DirectStorage games, according to Intel. As a result, companies like Phison, WD, and Samsung have all put time and money into developing firmware to increase sustained random read performance at higher block sizes, which should benefit both PC and PS5 gamers, as the next-gen gaming workload will be the same on all platforms, even if the IO architecture and implementation may differ.
