In 1975, Rush was on the brink of collapse.
After the commercial failure of Caress of Steel, the band found themselves drowning in debt, playing to shrinking crowds, and facing intense pressure from their label to abandon their progressive sound. The message was clear: simplify… or get dropped.
But instead of playing it safe, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart made the boldest decision of their careers.
They doubled down.
The result was 2112, a 20-minute sci-fi epic about individuality, control, and rebellion… and the album that didn’t just save Rush, it changed progressive rock forever.
Now, 50 years later, 2112 still stands as a landmark achievement. From the dystopian world of the Solar Federation to the iconic “Starman,” this album became a manifesto for artistic freedom and helped lay the groundwork for what many call the birth of prog metal.
