"Running On Empty" is a 1988 drama, directed by Sidney Lumet, and starring River Phoenix, Judd Hirsch, Christine Lahti, and Martha Plimpton. Exploring the powerful love and solidarity that unites a fugitive family on the run from the FBI, and the heart-breaking reality that they can't remain fugitives forever, this emotional and tear-jerking movie was nominated for several Oscars, including one for the late, great River Phoenix, who gives a captivating performance in the central role.
Phoenix and Plimpton returned to the screen in this movie 2 years after starring together in The Mosquito Coast alongside Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. In both movies they play teenagers in love, echoing their real-life offscreen relationship. Both actors are equally unusual and quirky, and were very well matched both on and off screen.
This thoughtful, gentle film is a beautiful examination of family and relationships which tugs powerfully at the heart strings. It also features some impressive piano work from Phoenix, who mimes some very complicated piano pieces flawlessly.
