Running my little alarm clock into MaxMSP and my Eurorack modular synth for granular processing, delay, and general chaotic scrambling 😂⏰
Reflecting back on the last few years, a core idea that emerged frequently for me in my creative practice that I'm excited to carry forward into the future was "play."
Not just playing your instrument...but playing WITH your instrument. Playing "just for fun", playing with no agenda.
For me, this started early in 2021 working my EP "MASS," in which I gathered pots and pans from the kitchen as instruments (because my studio was in storage) and ran around my house like a kid sampling everything I could make sound with—the creative process was so playful and curious, and it reminded me that music is everywhere—if we're listening for it.
This idea of play has also come up for me about a million times in my electroacoustic opera project... I put off working on this project for a LONG time because I didn't feel ready. I didn't have everything planned out perfectly.
But at some point I realized that I'll never be fully "ready" to jump into these big projects. There will ALWAYS be things to figure out, unanswered questions, etc. So I jumped in, and decided to treat everything like an experiment: playing with sound, playing with gestures, playing with "what ifs?" and letting curiosity lead me.
And then—of course—I realized that jumping in when you don't have all the answers and playing/creating/exploring purely for the sake of the experience, actually IS how we pull all the pieces together.
So, I'm looking forward to more creative explorations, following the sound, trying new ideas just 'cause, jumping in before I feel "ready", and sharing a lot of music with all of you ❤️
