“What’s the simplest minimal setup for generative music – say, just 3–5 modules in VCV?”

I LOVE this question so much!

Those of you who have been in this community for a while know that I’m a huge fan of small modular synth setups. I love the challenge of working with just a few tools, because I always feel that with “limitations” come endless possibilities.

There’s no “correct” small setup for generative music, but I’ve found that something as simple as a sound source (oscillator, etc.), a random voltage generator, and an envelope with modulatable attack / decay is enough to get started with some interesting sounds.

My go-to for creating self-evolving, generative patches with only a few modules is to carefully consider how I’m using randomness, feedback, & chaos to create spontaneous gestures & evolution over time.

This also touches on another Q that was submitted: “chaotic feedback - how would you build it?”

Something as simple as patching the output of a random voltage generator back into its own timing control (as seen in the video above^^) is a great way to break up the regularity of a steady clock source and add a bit more variety into things.

Or, cross modulating 2 oscillators (or 2 LFOs) is an awesome way to easily make your sound and control a bit more surprising and chaotic.

^^Here are 3 different patches using less than 5 modules in VCV Rack that each explore generative sound generation in a different way!

What other questions / topics should I cover in this Generative Music + Modular Synths series? Comment below to let me know!
