Today’s question is “What’s a good workflow to start adding complexity/layers to generative music? Are there techniques to layer rhythms and melodies in a consistent way?”
Creating melodic / rhythmic complexity in generative patches can vary a LOT depending on the style of music you’re interested in making, but there are a few tools I frequently reach for that you might find helpful:
1) quantizers – especially helpful for getting multiple melodies all sitting well with one another! In the video above, for example, 3 oscillators all tuned to the same base frequency and then controlled by random voltages running through a quantizer will mean that the pitches will always “fit” together harmonically (even though they are random).
2) sequential switches – helpful for passing modulation between voices, one at a time, so that individual layers don’t all change at once! In the video above, I’m sending a new random voltage into a quantizer, then into each of the 3 oscillators one at a time, thanks to the 1:4 sequential switch.
3) clock dividers – not included in this video, but helpful for keeping different parts of your patch rhythmically sync’d / related to one another; allowing you to choose divisions of a master clock to trigger different sounds or events.
