A year ago, two tiny cubs named Runa and Kodi arrived at our BEAR SANCTUARY Domazhyr, and what a journey itβs been since. π
Today, we celebrate their first trip around the sun in our care, and our hearts couldnβt be fuller watching them thrive.
Runa and Kodi were just weeks old when they were found alone in the Ukrainian wilderness β orphaned and frightened.
Weighing only 5 and 7 kg, the exhausted cubs had no chance on their own. An emergency rescue brought them to safety and straight to our sanctuary. πΏ
In an ideal world, they would have been rehabilitated and returned to the wild.
But with no facilities in Ukraine equipped for brown bear rehabilitation or rewilding, we stepped in to give them the life they deserve.
And today? Runa and Kodi are thriving. πΌ
Strong, playful, curious, and confident, exactly as they should be. To mark their one year anniversary, their caretakers spoiled them with their favourite enrichment and tasty treats. ππ
Hereβs to many more happy, healthy years ahead, little ones. π»π

A tyre, a bit of honey, or some frozen fruit: what may seem quite ordinary at first glance actually serves an important purpose for our bears. π―π«
These types of activities are known as enrichments. They encourage natural behaviours and help keep the bears physically and mentally stimulated. πͺπ§
Rather than simply having their food served to them, the bears have to search, climb, lick, explore, and sometimes even solve small challenges. πΏπΎ
In the wild, bears spend a large part of their day foraging for food. Enrichments are designed to reflect this natural behaviour, providing variety and stimulating the senses. This allows the animals to satisfy their natural curiosity and helps prevent boredom. πΎ
For rescued bears in particular, these challenges make an important contribution to their wellbeing. β€οΈπ»

Born to Perform, Rescued to Live: Manuschkaβs Story. π¦
Born in a facility in France and sold to a circus in Germany, she was forced to perform tricks from the time she was just a cub. Her world was confined to cages, crowds, and constant travel.
But everything changed in July 2024. π
After the heartbreaking loss of her companion, Manuschka was given a second chance. At the request of German veterinary authorities, we stepped in and brought her to TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary, where she began to healβphysically and emotionally. Through gentle care and positive reinforcement, she slowly started to trust again.
Then, in October 2024, she made her way to her forever home at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands. π‘πΏ
Today, Manuschka is thriving. Sheβs regained her appetite, built strong bonds with her caretakers, and loves nothing more than lounging on top of her favourite platform in the sun. βοΈ

Behind the cute puppy posts, the misery: undercover investigation in Bulgaria π£
β‘οΈ Puppies like Bella are being bred in conditions far from meeting basic welfare standards, only to be illegally trafficked on social media!
In the past months, FOUR PAWS have investigated numerous suspicious dog advertising posts coming from Bulgaria. π²
Hiding in plain sight in Facebook groups, unscrupulous sellers have developed techniques to trick unknowing users and to bypass platform rules. Posing as curious customers, only a few DMs led us to uncover a large-scale online dog trade, widely spread across Europe. π
π Eleven sellers were visited by undercover investigators, and what they found on-site exceeded our worst expectations: from questionable to sometimes dire conditions, few-week-old puppies like Bella are being shipped across the continent, very often without the required identification and vaccination.
β This gruesome trade is only enabled by Metaβs inaction against it.

Tim has suffered long enough.
Tim was born in 2003 and ever since he was just a tiny cub, he has been kept in poor conditions at the private Zoo park RoΕΎman in Slovenia. Although FOUR PAWS is offering Mr. RoΕΎmanec to rescue bear Tim since 2022, he still has no chance to live a species-appropriate lifeβ unless we speak up. π
Letβs show together that the world is watching, and that Tim deserves a fresh start.
At our beautiful BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach in Austria, Tim could finally enjoy space and proper care. Yet his owner, Mr. RoΕΎmanec, continues to refuse to voluntarily hand Tim over to us β claiming Tim is doing well.
But is Tim really doing well at Zoo park RoΕΎman?
We visited Tim in 2022. In 2023, we were denied access. Since 2024, Zoo park RoΕΎman has no valid license to operate as a zoo, and the facility is closed to visitors. What is Timβs life like behind those closed gates?
Meanwhile, Felix and Mici, two other bears rescued in 2025, are now thriving at our sanctuary.
Tim could finally thrive too β if given the chance.
Mr. RoΕΎmanec, Tim deserves a better life.
Slovenia deserves better for its wildlife. πΎ

As a cub, Tyson was cruelly torn from his mother and spent 16 years trapped in a filthy cage at a remote hunting station in western Ukraine, where he was likely used illegally as bait. π
Then, in October 2017, Tysonβs second chance finally arrived. After tireless negotiations, our team rescued Tyson and brought him to the safe haven of BEAR SANCTUARY Domazhyr. π³
Today, Tyson is thriving. Heβs healthy, happy, and living the peaceful life he always deserved, side by side with his best friend, Mashutka. π»
Now, summer days look very different for Tyson, spent lounging beneath the trees and splashing happily in his pool. Heβs got a great appetite and a love for peanuts, tomatoes, and apples, simple joys that mean everything after years of hardship. π
