Part 1 of my AMV Summer Bootcamp series!
Over the summer, I participated in Project Org Editor 2016 on animemusicvideos.org, and now that the contest is over I'm gonna publish them all here over the next couple of weeks. I plan to do a bit of a retrospective for each video, providing a bit of insight of my thoughts from each round. I entered the contest mainly as a learning experience, so I thought it might be interesting for others to see. There's some good stuff, there's some not so good stuff, but editing a video in one week is hard. =P
I will post the rankings from both myself and my sister (who essentially betas my videos) of my favorite from 1-5 (one being my favorite video from the competition and 5 being my least favorite, not necessarily reflecting the quality of the video but rather how much I enjoy it).
There are also other videos that have not been published yet and that I need to upload so I'll be posting those as well for a bit of a nice juxtaposition.
Anyway, time to actually talk about the video! The theme for this round was to choose a talisman from Jackie Chan Adventures (!!) and make a video based off of that. I thought about it a bit before deciding on the rabbit talisman, which lets the user have super speed. I immediately knew I wanted to use The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for this idea. And after thinking about it for a bit (which is actually a funny story on its own), I used music from the movie Run Lola Run because it matched the feeling I was going for, running and pushing even further even if you get exhausted.
For the editing itself, I wanted to emphasize the feel of motion and speed, and so there's a lot of zooms and pans that lead into other shots. I especially like the middle section as a result of this effect.
Ultimately, this video got a score of 206 out of 300. A common criticism was how it seemed to drag a bit, which I can see. Some parts ended up being more filler rather than pushing the idea forward. Also, some judges thought that it focused too much on running versus running fast. Fair enough, but what they don't realize was that the video actually had double meaning for the talisman (!!!!!). In Season 2, the rabbit talisman was used to go back in time by literally running back through time! Sound familiar? So in my heart I won the round for my true appreciation of the Jackie Chan Adventures lore. =P
My ranking: 3
My sister's ranking: 4 (tie)
Anime: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Song: Running Two (from the soundtrack of Run Lola Run)
Artist: Tom Tykwer
Program Used: Sony Vegas 12.0
