Part 3 of my AMV Summer Bootcamp series!
Winner of the Just Right Award at Youmacon 2016 (and in a few paragraphs you'll see why I had a good laugh at that).
The theme for this round was creating an AMV inspired by a form of literature, and as such I made this AMV with The Little Mermaid in mind. This was the last regular round in the contest, and in case I didn't make it to semifinals I wanted to create another AMV for this anime, even before I knew what the theme was. So even if I didn't move on, at least I could get more people to see Yurikuma Arashi.
But lucky for me, this round's theme went with the fairy tale nature of the show, and in the end it came down to a question of which fairy tale.
For that first day, I had a list of fairy tales on Wikipedia open, and did ctrl+f for bear. There's a ton of bear fairy tales after all, the most popular of those probably being Goldilocks and the Three Bears (which is what the title of the Youmacon award refers to hahaha). But none of those really went with the feeling I wanted for the AMV, so I broadened the list to fairy tales in general. Ultimately, I had it narrowed down to Cinderella or The Little Mermaid. I was originally gonna do Cinderella (I even had a rough storyboard for this idea), but I changed my mind and found that The Little Mermaid worked better.
(However, when I rewatched a scene from the show after I made this video, there's actually a moment in the show when the three Life Judgment guys compare Ginko to the Little Mermaid. Welp. Of course this anime isn't a retelling of that story, which was one of the stipulations of that round. But in retrospect my AMV might have been too on the nose, haha.)
Now, on to actually making this video... er, to put it bluntly, this video was one of the toughest videos I've ever made. Not because of challenging edits, or because of difficulty working with the idea. But because early Wednesday morning (two days into the round), due to an unfortunate incident involving brownies made with canola oil, I was puking while this song played in my head.
That incident pretty much killed all motivation to work with the song for the next two days. I even spent a good amount of time going through my iPod wondering if I could switch out "Hunger of the Pine" for another song. In the end, I got over it since my vision for this AMV had a certain ethereal feeling that I thought could only be achieved with this song. Then, I worked hard right up to the last couple hours on Sunday night. It was the first video during the contest that I had worked up to the last minute on, and unfortunately that became a trend for the rest of the contest. u_u
Ultimately, this video got a 218 out of 300. There were several comments about the song choice, and there were also issues with pacing at the end. I can definitely see where these reactions come from, but at the same time it's not something I was particularly bothered by. I really love this AMV from beginning to end. I don't think it's my best edited AMV of the competition (that's coming up), but it's certainly the one I want to watch over and over again the most.
