Okay so there is a really interesting rumor floating around right now and I had to talk about it because once you hear the reasoning, it actually clicks in a way I wasn't expecting.
The story goes like this: Disney is apparently eyeing Lionsgate as a potential acquisition target. And before you go "wait, isn't Disney doing fine at the box office," yes, they are. They literally just crossed 3 billion dollars worldwide in 2026. So this isn't a desperation move. This is a strategy move.
Here's the part that got me thinking. The argument being made is that Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar have lost somewhere around 75% of their audience. That is a staggering number. And while Disney overall is still making money, those specific brands are not performing the way they used to. The audiences that used to show up automatically, families, dads, guys who love action, faith-friendly viewers, people who brought their kids to every single Marvel and Star Wars movie without thinking twice, a lot of those people have quietly walked away.
So the idea with Lionsgate is not that Disney is broken and needs saving. The idea is that Disney needs a bridge. Something that can bring those audiences back while Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar take some time to recover and regroup.
And when you look at what Lionsgate actually has, it starts to make a lot of sense.
You've got Michael, which just became the highest grossing biopic of all time, passing Oppenheimer. It pulled in huge diverse crowds, families, older viewers, younger adults. That's a global event movie and Lionsgate made it happen.
You've got The Hunger Games, which still has real cultural weight, and a new movie coming in November 2026 with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back.
You've got John Wick, Saw, The Expendables, actual male-skewing genre franchises that Disney just doesn't really have right now under its own roof.
And then there's the faith and family lane, which honestly might be the most interesting piece of this whole conversation. Lionsgate has a real track record there with movies like I Can Only Imagine and Jesus Revolution. And now they've got Mel Gibson's Resurrection of the Christ sequel coming, which Gibson says is going to be wild, like spiritually epic and visually massive. That built-in audience is enormous and Hollywood keeps acting like it doesn't exist until the opening weekend proves otherwise.
The Supergirl situation is sitting right there as the warning sign. After Superman opened over 125 million dollars domestically, Supergirl opened to 37 million. That gap doesn't happen in a vacuum. When marketing and press narratives push away the exact families and general audience viewers you need to show up, they don't show up. And that's exactly what Disney is apparently trying to stop repeating.
Now this is still a rumor. Nothing is confirmed. Netflix is apparently also sniffing around Lionsgate despite publicly saying they're not interested, so there are multiple players in this. But the logic of why Disney would want this makes total sense to me, and I wanted to break it down and get your thoughts on it.
Do you think Disney buying Lionsgate would actually help bring those audiences back? Is this the right move or is it just throwing money at a symptom instead of fixing the actual problem? Drop your take in the comments, I genuinely want to hear where you land on this one.
