I've never recorded this stage before so I had to give it a go. I finished it once with the Wave Master, and no matter how many times I tried again, I failed. I went with the Leo II and did it twice in a row, and so here we are.
About this ship -
Pros -
- The red weapon is super powerful, shredding enemies easily, almost on par with a Wave Cannon Shot.
- The blue weapon is a rapid firing stream of reflective lasers, shorter in length than the R9's, but you cover the screen with so many bullets that it's a nonissue.
- The Yellow weapon bends at 90 degree angles to home in on enemies, making it an excellent fire and forget weapon.
- Picking up a single Bit powerup gives you both Bits, and the Psy Bits+ will also fire regular bullets with the Force detached and lasers with the Force attached. They also home in on enemies when you charge and release the Wave Cannon.
Cons -
- if you're limiting yourself, this ship can trivialize the game. It has no real weaknesses.
About the stage -
This is an homage of R-Type Final's stage 4.0. The stage itself isn't hard. There are a few popcorn enemies that come from different shafts in the facility and numerous Bydo on floating pallets that drop projectiles on you. The biggest normal threat is the snake enemy. You can destroy its lasers as you see me doing in this video, and then its head if you have a weapon - often the yellow weapon for a lot of ships - that will target it.
The boss is Subkeratom if I remember the name right - and is a mix of the first boss from R-Type II and R-Type Final. It starts you by putting you in front of its helmeted face, and you have to blow it up fast or get ready to dodge. Beams come out of its head. When you blow its helmet off, Dobkeratops is revealed. It will spit lasers down and out of its mouth, which bend in your ship's direction. You can fly up by the boss's forehead to avoid this. When it fires its beam from the chest, hover your ship (often with the ship's graphic in the beam) above the lethal part of the beam and release a Wave Cannon shot and keep firing until it stops. If it doesn't die, get back up by its head, above its mouth, and prepare to repeat the process. If you kill it, the body falls forward towards you, so get to the bottom right of the screen and watch for the Belmite heart to come out. This is nowhere near as difficult at the one in R-Type Final on R-Typer, as the heart projectiles don't move nearly as fast. Just take care - if you see them go off screen, they're going to come back from the same direction at you. Killing the covering projectiles will have them respawn after a few seconds over the heart.
With Wave Master when I did this stage, I was perfect with my positioning against the boss and destroyed it easily with the detached Force on the heart, because its Force sprays so many bullets. I failed numerous times trying again, to the point that I tried with the Leo II, and got it - not easily - twice in a row - once for practice, and once while recording.
