This video is part of a much larger set that encompasses the Ship Showcase playlist. This is the fifty second video that I recorded.
The Andromalius first appeared in R-Type Final as one of the three starter ships. It's a precursor to the Albatross, with a Force that homes in on enemies while you're shooting. The red weapon shoots a spiky, wavy beam straight ahead of the ship. The blue weapon is my personal favorite, and shoots at a 45 degree angle above the Force, dropping three bolts down on enemies when it hits the ceiling. It can be hard to aim, but it's fun. The yellow weapon is a long whip that changes direction on vertical movement. The only bits that this ship can use are Shadow Bits, which damage the enemy by leaving trails behind them. It can use the Homing Missiles, which are great for all occasions, and also the Scatter Bomb, which is good for ground based enemies. The Rodless Force will home in on enemies while firing, making it much like the Tentacle Force. The ship's graphic has arms on the top and bottom that hold onto the Force, and are not part of the ship's hitbox. The Wave Cannon fires an AoE blast that is good for hitting through walls and enemies.
This stage is an homage to R-Type's stage 4, and is when the difficulty in the original game really ramped up. You've got flying Bydo that leave trails behind them that you can crash into, and they appear from many different areas of the screen, so memorization is key. The boss is the Combiler and will split itself into three sections with three different weak points. The Andromalius' Rodless Force made short work of this boss for me, which can otherwise be pretty tricky to deal with. There was a safe spot you could stay in R-Type on the right side of the screen with your Force behind the ship, but I don't know if that would work in this stage.
Did you know - Andromalius is the name of a demon in the Lesser Key of Solomon? Look it up if you're interested. It's telling that humanity in R-Type was going so far to defeat the Bydo that they started using naming conventions like that.
