Introduced in 1950, the RT-159A/URC-4 survival radio was issued to American and Canadian military aircrews to allow them to communicate with rescue forces if they were forced down. Capable of transmitting and receiving voice signals on the VHF and UHF bands up to 170 kilometres away, the radio was a marvel of early electronics miniaturization, employing a clever and efficient circuit based entirely on vacuum tubes. Used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the URC-4 was replaced in the late 1960s by more advanced transistorized radios.
