Completed in 1962 for the San Francisco Symphony's 50th anniversary, Roy Harris' eighth symphony recalls and celebrates the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The work came shortly after the composer's chamber cantata "Canticle to the Sun" (1961), which also found its inspiration in the same subject.
