This is part 1 of a two-part build where I’m making a concrete cylinder fire pit with a custom metal inlay. Before I can build the form, I have to solve a problem I created for myself: boring a hole under the finished concrete slab so I can run a propane line to the center. Since switching to propane was a late change, the line didn’t get installed before the slab was poured, and getting under it turned out to be way harder than expected.
After trying a few different tools, including an earth auger and a telescoping pressure washer wand, I move on to cutting the circular wood forms on the CNC table and bending 1/4" plywood around them to create the shell. Then I start the metal inlay that Kelly designed, welding the pieces together before Roisin and I take it to a metal forming shop to have it rolled into a circle. Once it’s back home, I weld the final seam, transfer the stencil, and cut the design out by hand.
