Roland Garros: Who was Philippe Chatrier?
Each Grand Slam tournament honours the greats of the game, in some form.
At Roland Garros – which takes its name from a non-tennis playing aviator – the show court’s stands are named for the so-called Four Musketeers – Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet and Rene Lacoste – who made up the victorious 1927 Davis Cup squad.
But the court itself bears the name of a man who never went beyond the third round of a major – but he was responsible for modernising French tennis and helped transform the sport into the global success we see today.
