Released in 2008, the Decade was produced to celebrate the brand's 10 year anniversary. It started as a limited edition but is now part of the regular line-up. It's manufactured at the Tavicusa factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. It features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and filler.
01:18 Prelight
The Decade is available in several vitolas whereas this sample is a 6.5 x 52 toro. Its construction is remarkably straight and the spring is very firm, which occasionally borders on hard. It has an antique oak hue and a slightly oily sheen. The veins can be somewhat rustic. It delivers notes of tonka bean, agarwood, and oud with a hint of cacao. The prelight offers excellent airflow on the draw with notes of chocolate, tonka bean, and caraway seed.
03:18 1st Third Tasting Notes
The Decade opens as a rich and opulent smoke. It has some minor burn issues, though. The burn line is thick and oily. Its flavours are dominated by cacao, chocolate, and black cherry or damson plum.
04:11 2nd Third Tasting Notes
The second third's burn line is worse than the first and continues to degrade so it requires touching up. But otherwise, it produces a solid backbone with a beautiful steel white grey colour. The flavours have grown in intensity but don't offer much more nuance. The dominant flavour is coffee grounds while there are notes of cooked cherry jam and pepper.
05:46 Final Third Tasting Notes
The final third is strong but not much more than the previous third, which is probably for the best as it's quite pungent. The final third, however, consists mostly of a simple oak and pepper accord.
08:24 Burn & Combustion
Although there were issues throughout the first and second third, the burn angle did improve after touching up and provided excellent airflow and a solid ash backbone. The temperature stays cool throughout until the nub where it begins to heat up.
09:20 Overall Experience
The band probably needs a facelift as it's started to look a little dated. The box seems quite nice but not having one to review, CP couldn't comment much on that. The cigars have an RRP of $14 and can be bought for less when paying for a full box. As for its occasion, it's best enjoyed as a casual cigar for the light evening and night.
11:19 Pairings
Consider dark chocolate, especially spicy varieties like the Argencover saffron range. You could also opt for pretzels of cured hams like prosciutto or jambon bayonne. As for beverages, cognac would be ideal, damson gin would be great to bring out the first third's accord while espresso and other coffee styles would be great.
