Paul Anthony met Claudio Sgroi of Mombacho Cigars who introduced us to their latest collaboration with Diplomático rum. Watch this video to discover Diplomático Cigars by Mombacho and learn about how the blend was conceived for pairing with the popular Venezuelan rum!
Claudio Sgroi is both Mombacho's president and master blender. He was excited at the concept of producing a cigar to be paired with a specific beverage. Occasionally, a drink will be produced to go with cigars such as The Dalmore's Cigar Malt. However, this is the first time a cigar was blended to be enjoyed with a rum from a particular expression by a single brand.
None of these cigars have been infused or flavoured to go with Diplomático rum. Instead, Claudio traditionally blended them using Nicaraguan filler tobacco from Jalapa, Condega, and Estelí as well as an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper to complement their aromas.
For Mombacho, this is the first time that they have blended a cigar that isn't a 100% Nicaraguan puro in order to create a cigar that was perfectly made for Diplomático rum.
Each of the three vitolas are made with different Diplomático rum blends in mind. For instance, the Petit Corona was blended for the Mantuano. As a result, it's a full-flavour medium-bodied blend.
Meanwhile, the 5x50 Robusto was developed for the Reserva Exclusiva and offers a hint of spice to offset the rum's sweetness.
Finally, the 6x52 Toro offers a longer and more elegant experience to be enjoyed when slowly sipping a premium rum. It was specifically blended for the Diplomático Ambassador but Claudio also kept the Distillery Collection's various characters in mind when creating it.
While the blend for each cigar is somewhat similar, each one has been carefully tweaked to be optimally paired with their corresponding Diplomático rums.
