00:00 Introduction
Bulleit rye whiskey was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Liquor Formula, a quantifiable review matrix that you can use online or quickly refer to if you're in a hurry.
00:44 Overview
Tom Bulleit revived his great-great grandfather's 19th-century whiskey brand in 1987 by using the exact same recipe. The result is a well-composed portfolio under the Bulleit name, which is known for its high-rye content creations. After critical acclaim, the brand built its own distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky, in 2014.
03:17 Robe & Appearance
Rye 95 is a glistening gold with just a bit of an orange hue. Its viscosity isn't overly thick. The legs run down the side of the glass quite quickly. As it's a straight whiskey, it features no additives.
04:12 Nose
The nose features a crisp, characterful, popcorn-like beginning. There's lots of vanilla with hints of charred white oak. The Rye shines through and displays dark aromatics like pumpernickel bread and spicy leather. There's also a nuance of fresh citrus like pink grapefruit zest.
05:32 Palate
The flavour is much aligned with the nasal expression. It opens with vanilla cream, charred roasted bread, and wood characteristics. The white oak expresses itself clearly before revealing spicy rye bread. Orange marmalade is also present while ginger spice and pepper open up towards the end. The finish is clean, crisp, and not very long.
06:57 Cocktail Suggestions
Great both for sipping and mixing, Bulleit is ideal for classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, The Manhattan, the Sazerac, and the Whiskey Sour.
07:51 Overall Experience
The bottle itself is minimalistic with embossed branding that's reminiscent of a medicine flask. The label is fresh and green while detailing the necessary information.
10:18 Pairings
Pumpernickel with a smear of butter would be excellent. You could also add oysters for a fuller and more complex experience. A crispy chocolate bar with pieces of nuts would go well, too. As for cigars, something characterful like the Roma Craft's Neanderthal would be a great choice.
