Maatsuyker became the FIRST HORSE TO DIE IN THE 2025 VICTORIAN JUMPS RACING SEASON when he was killed on March 20 at Warrnambool following a jumps trial.
He was struggling to clear the last hurdle and knuckled but was forced to finish the trial. He came third. He had sustained a tendon injury and was killed after the trial.
It was 6-year-old Maatsuyker’s second jumps racing season and he was killed before even making it into an official race.
Last year was the deadliest jumps racing season in Victoria ever recorded, when 10 horses were killed from jumps races and jumps trials. Racing Victoria conducted yet another review of the safety of jumps racing and implemented slight adjustments.
Maatsuyker’s death further proof that jumps racing can never be made safe and should be ended immediately like it has in the rest of the country.
