Rievaulx was the first Cistercian Abbey in England, established in 1132, and extended by its second Abbot, Aelred who added the Gothic parts to a Norman base. Dissolved by Henry the Bad in 1538. The fabric of this Abbey is more depleted than other local Abbeys like Fountains and Byland. No doubt to the enrichment of farmhouses and 'Statey Homes' in the area.
