This living room had good bones, beautiful original details and incredible natural light, but it was missing a heartbeat. In episode 18 of my historic home renovation series, we're finally tackling the fireplace and continuing the transformation of this 1930s Tudor living room.
From the beginning, I wanted to design this house as an experience. I didn't want to play it safe. I leaned into a dark, moody, almost academia-inspired feeling, with nostalgia baked into every room. I wanted the house to somehow feel familiar even if you'd never been here before.
In this episode, I'm sharing the story behind the living room design, the original cast-iron wood stove that took three people to remove, my decision to install a gas fireplace instead of wood-burning, the renovation-loan process, a contractor experience that sent up some major red flags, chimney and masonry repairs, and why spending more on the right fireplace contractor ended up being worth every penny.
I also walk through some of the paint choices that helped create the mood of this room, including Farrow & Ball Sulking Room Pink and the deep oxblood tone I chose for the fireplace mantle.
Ultimately, I wasn't designing around the safest or most practical choice. I was designing for a feeling.
