This year 2000 PowerBook runs Diablo II and MORE (no console needed)— proving you don’t need a console to play great retro games.

In this episode of Game Closet, I take a $40 PowerBook G3 Pismo from the year 2000 and turn it into a surprisingly capable retro gaming laptop with 1GB of RAM, an SSD upgrade, fresh thermal paste, and Mac OS X Tiger.

Then we put it to the test with classic Macintosh games and legendary late-90s PC titles including:

• Rocky & Bullwinkle’s Know-It-All Quiz Game
• Burning Monkey Solitaire 3
• Crop Circles
• Maelstrom
• Cobra Gunship
• PGA Tour Golf III
• Luxor 2
• Deathground
• StarCraft + Brood War
• Unreal Tournament
• Diablo II: Lord of Destruction

Some of these games defined an era. Others are forgotten Mac gems that deserve another look.

What surprised me most wasn’t just that the Pismo could run them…

…it’s how right they feel on period-correct hardware.
