šŸ•Šļø Rest in Peace, Lutar šŸ•Šļø Lutar fought hard for his little life.

After nearly finishing a 6-mile walk along the lakefront Saturday afternoon, I saw him - just across from Lincoln School on Forest Avenue. A small sparrow, struggling to take flight. Struggling to breathe. He rolled off the lawn into the street and ended up beneath a parked BMW. That’s where I met him. And that’s when I named him Lutar, which means ā€œto fightā€ in Portuguese. I couldn’t leave him there to be crushed. So we gently scooped him up using a Trader Joe’s grocery bag and carried him across the street to the Lincoln schoolyard. We tucked him under a bench, out of harm’s way. Then I started calling for help.

Eventually, I was connected with someone truly special: Jeanie, the only licensed wildlife bird rehabilitator in our area. She said yes - she’d help.

That Saturday evening, we drove all the way out to Buffalo Grove with hope in our hearts. And on that ride, I played ā€œHis Eye Is On The Sparrowā€ - the Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount version…for Lutar. I wanted him to feel peace, to know he was seen and loved. That song felt like a prayer for him.

Jeanie took him in with care and compassion. And later, she sent this message:ā€œIt was definitively a brain damage from some kind of trauma to his head… He fought strong until he got to me, then felt safe to let go. He went in peace with no struggle. I am sure he appreciated you for rescuing him… He did not have to die alone and be left outside.ā€

šŸ’” I cried. Because even the tiniest among us deserve dignity. Lutar didn’t die alone. He was seen. He was named. He was fought for. And he mattered.

Thank you, Jeanie, and to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center that guided us to her. Your care gave Lutar a soft place to land.

šŸ•Šļø Fly free now, little warrior.

If you ever find a bird in need:

āœ… Keep them warm and upright.
āœ… Gently wrap them to limit movement.
āœ… And never hesitate to reach out for help.
