Playthrough with Jill. This game was released 30 years ago today in Japan. It’s the puzzle at 14:48 that gets me every time now… I was a lively boy when I first played this, then a young man, now I’m the tired middle-aged guy… so long as I never get to the old man stage I think I’ll be ok.

Jill’s story is mostly easier than what Chris’. She can hold eight items whilst Chris can only hold six, which makes inventory management far better. She also gets to wield the bazooka, which is the weapon of choice for taking down hunters. She’s clearly also far more intelligent than Chris, such as knowing the login name and passwords for the computer at 2:18:23 before actually getting this info at 2:40:31.

She does have one major disadvantage though: she’s got less health than Chris. One zombie bite is usually enough to take her to the yellow health level. You need to be especially careful around hunters with her, as they can one shot kill her even when her health is in the yellow level. It’s why I try to just get by several of the hunters rather than take them on, it’s easier.

To get the best ending you need to have both Chris and Barry around at the end of the game. To save Chris you have to find and use all three MO disks to obtain the passwords, then find and open the jail cell. For Barry, when he drops the rope, just wait around until he comes back. Then in the underground, go with him when he asks, but don’t let him go first. Doing these things will ensure he survives.

This is the PAL version, which like the American version, was famously censored -the opening FMV had several violent shots removed completely, such as images of corpses and Joseph killing one of the zombie dogs. The FMV of the first zombie also removed a shot of it dropping Kenneth’s severed head. I’m not sure why they only censored the FMVs though -during gameplay you can still blow zombie heads off and there are several violent death sequences for the S.T.A.R.S members depending on how you play.

In Japan, this game was called Bio Hazard, but due to trademark issues the name was changed to Resident Evil. The game was also made more difficult, the auto aim the Japanese version had was disabled and enemies were given more health. Ink ribbons, the items needed to save the game with, came in packs of three originally, the non-Japanese version made them packs of two.
