Playthrough of advanced mode with Chris Redfield. I never beat this back in the day, I only beat the standard mode with Jill. I was wondering why I never used Chris, and I quickly figured out why: advanced mode is very, very hard. It’s more difficult than standard mode, almost all the item locations have been rearranged and the enemies have also been rearranged.

Chris can take more damage than Jill, but that’s about all he’s got advantage wise. His major drawback is only having six inventory slots, which is just a nightmare for item management. He also doesn’t get to use the bazooka, meaning the shotgun is his weapon of choice most of the time -not ideal against the hunters.

It’s better to just try to run past the hunters instead of fighting them in certain places. The main areas to avoid them is at 1:38:04 and 1:47:20. Both of these rooms each have three hunters in them, if they surround you you’re pretty much dead.

The chimera enemies are really annoying. They’re difficult to shoot if they’re above you and they also have way too much health -there’s one at 2:25:33 I hit around five times with the shotgun and it still didn’t die. I gave up and tried to just ignore them for the rest of the playthrough.

This time I made sure Rebecca survived, but didn’t rescue Jill. I’d never seen how the cutscenes played out this way, and I love some of the dialogue between Chris and Rebecca. My favorite exchange is at 2:40:02.

Chris: OK, I trust you.
Rebecca: TRUST MEEE!!!!!1

The dialogue for this game is timeless. Although I’m a bit mystified by something Rebecca says at 52:50. “I can treat you, expect for your major injury.” What does she mean by that? She’ll fully heal you regardless.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut was originally released in 1997. It contains the original game (referred to as “standard” mode), but also includes new beginner and advanced modes. Several backgrounds were changed for the advanced mode:

It was also advertised as having uncensored cutscenes, however in most places it was still censored. The censored scenes include several parts of the intro and the first zombie cutscene. Finally, Director’s Cut also included a demo for Resident Evil 2. Unfortunately, this demo is not included in the PSN version, which is what I have.
