Replay of the LIVE Zoom conference of Chapter 2 of The LIfe-Saving Divorce Book Study from October 21, 2020. This chapter is on external factors that make divorce more likely (factors outside your control; not just you and your spouse's own personality and choices).
We talk about:
1) Age, education, income and the divorce rate based on these factors.
2) Religious legalism such as "purity culture" and "biblical patriarchy" and "forgiveness-on-demand" and how that legalism makes marriages unsafe.
3) The prevalence of bad behavior that leads to divorce: We have a lot of marriage-endangering sin in our Christian marriages. Nearly half of U.S. divorces are for "life-saving" reasons (see definition below).
4) The divorce rate is nearly as low as it was 50 years ago. (And no, it's not because the marriage rate has dropped.)
5) The blindness in faith communities about character issues, sweeping red flags under the carpet, or assuming that marriage will fix someone's poor self-control and serious behavior problems.
6) The problem of maintaining one's status in the church: Appearing to be a model couple, the perfect family, and spiritually mature.
