March 10, 2024 service for the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City. The Reverend J Sylvan's sermon explores concepts from Danya Ruttenbergβs book 'On Repentance and Repair,' rooted in the work of the medieval philosopher Maimonides and his five stages of repentance: naming and owning the harm; beginning to change one's behavior; making restitution and accepting consequences; apologizing; and making different choices. This ancient framework for making amends is contrasted with contemporary American cultureβs emphasis on mere apology or forgiveness. Reverend Sylvan challenges the congregation to prioritize relationships by engaging in the difficult but transformative work of repentance when they have caused harm to loved ones and by actively working towards repairing it.
All incidental piano music in this service was composed by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.
