In my 'faster than zero-tick' shaky sand videos, my machines are activated with a lever to turn them on and off. If you have tried to connect a repeater into the on/off circuit the sand doesn't shake and you can't get your rapid growth. These circuits allow you to extended that on/off switch and even connect it to an auto-on/off by using (for example) a comparator to tell when you are running low on items.
