In May 2026, survivors of Libya’s detention system stood in front of the International Criminal Court on the first day of the confirmation of charges hearing against Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri (May 19-21).
A senior figure within a powerful Libyan militia formerly known as SDF/RADA based in Tripoli, and affiliated with the Libyan Presidential Council, El Hishri, is accused of committing, ordering and overseeing crimes against humanity and war crimes against Libyan nationals as well as against migrants and refugees detained in Mitiga Prison.
As said by Refugees in Libya: "The survivors came not only for themselves but in memory of those who died, disappeared and those who still cannot speak because of fear.”
“For years many believed the suffering imposed in Libya would never reach a courtroom.”
“Now we ask the Court to go further - beyond El Hishri, beyond militias, and toward the wider system that enabled crimes against humanity in Libya”.
