On 10 September 2021, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung hosted an international panel discussion to commemorate the loss of 258 workers in the Ali Ennterprise factory fire in Karachi, Pakistan, nine years ago and to mark the publication of the book Transnational legal activism in global value chains. The discussion included Pakistani contributors to the book, who are also protagonists in the struggle for justice around the Ali Enterprises factory fire.

The publication Transnational legal activism in global value chains - The Ali Enterprises Factory Fire and the Struggle for Justice, edited by Miriam Saage-Maaß, Peer Zumbansen, Michael Bader and Palvasha Shahab (Open Access: link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-73835-8) is the product of a collaborative research project. Resulting from the tragic and avoidable fire at the Ali Enterprises textile factory on 11 September 2012 in Karachi, Pakistan, academics and practitioners explored the legal advocacy and law reform efforts that have been unfolding after this man-made disaster. The incident costed the lives of at least 258 workers and left another 55 injured. Many of the egregious and inadequate working conditions have not significantly improved.
Transnational legal activism in global value chains combines academic reflections about the impacts of human rights law with the experience of practitioners from the field, allows interesting insight into the thinking of academics and practitioners from South Asia about the role of Human Rights law in labour rights struggles, while providing an overview over the debate on the role of law in improving working conditions in global value chains.
