In this edition of Reef Snapshot, explore two innovations helping us restore vital coastal habitats and better understand the species that depend on them.
Meet the Mako Robot — a new underwater technology developed in partnership with Central Queensland University and marine robotics company Ulysses — designed to plant seagrass seeds and restore vital meadows faster and more efficiently than ever before.
You’ll also see a world-first in Australian waters: scientists using ultrasound technology on free-swimming manta rays to detect pregnancy and maturity in seconds — unlocking critical insights to help protect this iconic species. The trial was made possible with the support of Blue Penguin Ocean Conservation Trust, the University of Sunshine Coast and Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, in partnership with the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and Biopixel Oceans Foundation.
