When Jesus died on Calvary, his sacrifice offered redemption for more than just the human race. It seems that he may have died to redeem Heaven as well. The Greek text tells us "God so loved the {cosmos} that he gave his only begotten son." Not only does the scripture tell us of the redemption of man, but of the defeat of Satan as well.
