In this series, we recreate recipes from a 16th-century Indian alchemical treatise, the Rasaprakāśasudhākara (The Nectar Mine Light on Mercury). In its eleventh chapter, this text describes the making of alchemical gold and silver, pearls and coral.
This experiment focusses on a recipe for making silver, using white arsenic, hair, lead, copper, and silver. We think the passage of the recipe is missing a verse or two, possibly describing the use of liquid mercury. However, since this is uncertain, we stuck to the recipe as it is transmitted in the current edition as far as possible.
