Today I spoke with Deanna Moore, who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of the JWs fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing in a fifth-generation hardcore JW family
• Doing extensive pioneering and missions work from an early age.
• Going through three difficult marriages shaped and affected in various ways by the impact of the cult on her.
• Receiving constant pressure from the church to do "just a little bit more" for Jehovah.
• Being urged to share her faith not just as a way to recruit new converts but also to reinforce her faith.
• Racing on the treadmill of constantly trying to earn salvation and to love herself while she sees herself as innately bad.
• Being indoctrinated with the concept of universal JW sovereignty.
• Feeling like she was putting off her entire life for the afterlife and Paradise.
• Enduring the process of being disfellowshipped and shunned.
• Realizing that religions place blame on humans but never on the worldview and doctrines so that they can perpetually defend the belief system, holy book, and authority figures.
• Facing the reality head-on that JWs are manipulating and spiritually abusing people en masse.
• Developing a new post-religion identity and life dynamics regarding things like non-religious friendships, education, politics, money, and sexuality.
• Seeing how the hyper-isolation of the JW cult leads people to ignore red flags in relationships.
• After leaving the cult, feeling like life finally made sense and that she could flourish.
