Today I spoke with Kate Mary, who placed her faith in Jesus as a child but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing up in a deeply evangelical and patriarchal home where questioning faith was forbidden and strict obedience defined love.
• Being taught from childhood that hell was real, salvation could be “lost,” and even as a six-year-old she was responsible for saving her friends from eternal torment.
• Internalizing the Christian worldview including normalizing guilt, shame, and fear—especially around doubt, autonomy, and sexuality—while learning to appear “the good Christian girl.”
• Being fascinated with apocalyptic fiction and zombies stemmed from early indoctrination in rapture panic and end-times imagery.
• Watching the pressure of patriarchal religion distort her parents’ marriage—her mother stripped of independence, needing permission even for a haircut.
• Deconstructing her faith gradually after witnessing real human diversity through her husband’s Air Force career, friendships, and exposure to suffering beyond her evangelical bubble.
• Seeing her friend’s transgender child thrive and understanding firsthand that identity and love cannot be reduced to church dogma.
• Clashing with her fundamentalist mother over her gay son’s right to exist and realizing that “family loyalty” in religion often means submission to cruelty.
• Discovering through research and therapy that the Bible’s moral contradictions and political manipulation—especially around abortion—were tools of control, not truth.
• Embracing a new life without guilt, where love, empathy, and logic replace fear—and where writing strong, independent women in dystopian worlds became her act of reclamation.
Many thanks to Kate for sharing her story!
