He became a youth pastor at only 19, served in Southern Baptist and Reformed evangelical spaces, went to Bible college, preached the gospel, led worship, taught students, and gave his life to ministry. But over time, the faith that once gave him purpose, identity, and community began to fracture. In this powerful conversation, Andy shares his journey out of evangelical Christianity: the slow unraveling of his beliefs, the pain of losing church community, the theological questions that would not go away, and the human stories that forced him to confront the harm being done in the name of God. We talk about what it means to leave Christianity when the church was once your family, why people stay in high-control religious systems, how evangelicalism treats LGBTQ people, the emotional cost of deconstruction, and why “church hurt” is often too small a phrase for the deeper collapse of belief. Andy also opens up about finding healing, meaning, and mental health outside the church through hiking, nature, storytelling, and what he now describes as pantheism.
