Today I spoke with Dustin Curlee, who placed his faith in Jesus as a young man, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Growing up in a home where love was very conditional, which left him predisposed to be attracted to the supposedly unconditional love in religion.
• Placing his faith in Jesus as his Savior during a vulnerable time in his life when he desperately needed support and community.
• Finding his comfort zone in legalism and holiness as a way to thank god for rescuing him.
• Seeing himself as being in a large-scale spiritual battle where angels and demons were fighting for his soul.
• Enjoying the appeal of systematic theology and feeling like he was able to make sense of theology and have a consistent worldview.
• Becoming a pastor of a Reformed home church but eventually being accused of heterodoxy as he asked hard questions.
• Having increasing questions about the Bible and Bible interpretation, and finding Christian answers to be increasingly weak and poorly thought out.
• Realizing that theology and doctrine cultivate sociopathic mentalities where people become less concerned about their fellow humans and more concerned about theological ideas and interpretations at all costs.
• Seeing through the sophistry and rhetoric of Christianity.
• Entering a depression for a season as he was exiting Christianity.
• Feeling relief when he realized he was an atheist and no longer had to try to make Christianity seem rational.
• The beauty of raising kids with their autonomy intact and without threats of hell.
Many thanks to Dustin for sharing his story!

Interview: Dustin Curlee — why the long, painful journey out of Christianity is worth it
In this candid conversation, Dustin Curlee shares how fear of hell, promises of belonging, seminary disillusionment, and years in ministry led to deep deconstruction—and the hard-won peace he found after leaving Christianity. We unpack dispensationalism, Calvinism, preterism, church control, religious trauma, addiction and recovery, parenting without indoctrination, and the freedom of rebuilding life on honesty and empathy.
Expect a raw, hopeful roadmap for questioning believers, exvangelicals, and anyone healing from faith.
