Chernihiv, one of the oldest Ukrainian cities and the largest in the north of the country, has been heavily damaged by the Russian army. It was under siege from late February to early March 2022. The Russians deliberately targeted thermal power plants to deprive Chernihiv residents of heat and electricity, destroyed a bridge that allowed people to evacuate and bring in food, and struck the water supply system. In March 2022, the city authorities reported an impending humanitarian disaster. However, the defense forces drove the enemy out of the region, and Chernihiv survived and is now recovering, although the war continues and the danger has not passed.
In this episode of the “Restoration” documentary series, we highlight local and national reconstruction initiatives working in the Sivershchyna region, including savED, Because We Can, Phoenix-Ukraine, and Repair Together. We also share the stories of dedicated residents of the region who, despite the significant destruction, are returning to their hometowns and villages, working and contributing to the reconstruction efforts.
