Canarsie, Brooklyn. I left it for Florida in December of 2000. Now, 22 years later I visit it again. A lot has changed. I used to be able to get on my bicycle and ride to lots of different friends' houses. We could go to the pizzeria for a coke and a slice. Probably a buck fifty back then. I even would go fishing once in a while as a kid. I was born in 73 and I have early memories of hiking through the weeds in the back of Canarsie Park with a rod and reel to throw a treble hook in hopes of snagging a bunker. More often, we'd snag the remains of an abandoned vehicle or shopping cart. The neighborhood had it's share of ne'er-do-wells and gangsters that probably contributed to all kinds of things getting deposited into the waters back there! As I got older, my uncle and I would hop on the party boats out of Sheepshead Bay. I remember when we'd go far enough out, you couldn't see land. But you knew land was there because there was a pall of smog that hung over every bit of space that a car could drive on. All around, I remember seeing lots of trash left behind.
I don't mention this to give the impression that I didn't have a good childhood. I had lots of fun and did lots of stupid things and got away with it. It was a different time. With dirtier burning engines, and a lot less attention towards all kinds of environmental issues. I bring up the filth I grew up with to help give hope to the new outrages I hear sometimes. I mean, it's good and all seeing kids getting involved in cleaning up the world and policing the big companies that threaten the oceans and our rights to clean air. I would just like to remind everyone how far we've come in the past 30 or 40 years. We don't mention the good stuff often enough. Ask your boss how often an employee comes in to say how good things are! Once in a while, it's nice to hear the good stuff. Being gone for a few decades made it very evident that a lot of good has gone towards making the water around my hometown cleaner and healthier. Good for you, New York! I bet the same can be said about lots of places. I know of areas around Tampa that have bounced back after regulations against dragging nets across the flats.
So, yeah. During my recent absence from Youtube, I did a bunch of things. Mostly good. Some kinda boring. But not very much at all that was worth sharing with the world. Hopefully, I can get back into some fun times on the water as the summer comes to a close. I still have a few more boring loose ends to clean up after parking Kon Tiki III, but there are plenty of fishing and paddling and hijinks I'll be posting before long.
