Real marriage is part of a complex social system, which we tweak at our peril. That’s the view of a Professor at Bristol University, Stuart Burgess, a leading academic and complex systems engineer. In our conversation, Prof Burgess, an actual ‘rocket scientist’, compares marriage to the intricate engineering of spacecraft. Just as tampering with a spacecraft’s delicate systems can lead to failure, redefining marriage without understanding its complexity can lead to societal breakdown. He asserts that marriage is not merely a personal choice but a “complex, fine-tuned delicate system” that plays a critical role in the stability of society.
Prof Burgess emphasises that marriage serves as a “real restraint on human behaviour.” He explains that the commitment to lifelong union discourages impulsive decisions driven by fleeting desires. He notes that “people who save themselves for marriage and believe in lifelong union” are more likely to have a “fulfilling and satisfying” relationship.
