His argument is valid, but it is also conditional. IF you rely only on one version of the bench press, you will not maximize growth. However, I argue instead, if you use a variety of benching exercises with barbells, dumbbells, and machines and even bodyweight movements like dips and push ups, you will grow. Chest flys and isolation exercises are necessary to maximize growth, but they are not completely necessary and especially not at the expense of getting stronger on your presses.
