This first appeared in 1974 on KOIN-TV, in Portland Oregon. Ray Summers was a field reporter who had travelled across the entire Pacific Northwest meeting everyone from all walks of life.
When KOIN started a new lifestyle show named Northwest Illustrated, Ray was tapped to create weekly segments from his travels and meetings with unique people that made the northwest what it was. He continued doing these segments, working with the best teams of photographers, editors and designers KOIN had, beyond Northwest Illustrated, to his own segments, Ray Summers at Large, for the next 15 years. Ray touched so many people's lives during this time, and had an unmistakable voice that matched these slices of life in Oregon and Washington with great aplomb.
What you're seeing here is the very first episode Ray and KOIN ever did in this vein, and I'm all but certain it was never again aired, and remained locked in the vault in the KOIN basement until myself, and a few others dusted the tapes off, cleaned up the old U-Matic 3/4 tape teck, and digitised them some 35 years later. I have numerous other episodes that I hope to upload over time.
