A baby babirusa from Chester, Cheshire, UK, has been born at Chester Zoo, giving a boost to one of the world’s most endangered pig species. The female piglet, named Rana, arrived in May weighing just a few hundred grams and was described by keepers as being the size of a grapefruit. Her birth comes as babirusas, also known as “pig-deer”, face a growing threat in the wild from African swine fever, with conservationists warning the species could soon be classed as critically endangered. Zoo staff said Rana’s arrival is a vital addition to international efforts to protect the species.
