Bayfront Park in Pinole, CA, is one of my favorite railfan sites. I hadn’t been there in quite a while so I dragged myself out the door at 6:30am on a Sunday morning for the 45 minute drive to the site. Upon arriving I was astounded to find a fairly massive bridge that connected the park to an existing bay-front trail. I had heard the talk about this structure but hadn’t really followed its construction. Anyway, it offers some prime locations for watching and recording trains.
The rail line is double tracked and signaled for travel in both directions. It is owned by Union Pacific who shares the road with Amtrak San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor service along with the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr. BNSF also has a line on the cliff above the UP line that serves the port of Richmond.
